Speaker Biographies

Robert C. Gallo, Baltimore

Dr. Robert C. Gallo is Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Gallo and his co-workers pioneered the field of human retrovirology discovering the first and second human retroviruses (HTLV-1 and 2) and then in 1983 independently discovering HIV and showing that HIV was the cause of AIDS. Dr. Gallo developed the first blood test to detect the virus and later work was critical in identifying the role of chemokine receptors in the pathogenesis of HIV. Dr Gallo has received the prestigious Albert Lasker Award on two occasions and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Paul A. Volberding, San Francisco

Paul A. Volberding is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and Chief of the Medical Service at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center. He is widely recognized as a world authority on antiretroviral therapy. He is the co-editor in chief of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and currently the President of the HIV Medical Association. He was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1999.

Kevin M. De Cock, Atlanta - Kenya

Kevin M. De Cock is currently Director, Centre for Disease Control-Kenya, overseeing the diverse activities of the US CDC and Prevention in this East African country. He is also a Visiting Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is widely recognized as a leading authority on the epidemiology of HIV infection.

Charles Van Der Horst, North Carolina - Malawi

Charles van der Horst is Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Visiting Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He currently conducts clinical trials of prevention of mother-to-child transmission in Lilongwe, Malawi and treatment of chronic HIV infection in adults in Johannesburg. He has been teaching, taking care of patients with HIV and conducting research since 1981.

David K. Apuuli - Uganda

David K. Apuuli is Director General of the Uganda AIDS Commission. Prior to assuming this position in 1999, he was Director of Medical Services for Uganda and later Director General of the Ministry of Health in Uganda. He is a Founding Member on the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) Policy Advisory Committee.
